Step one, no app needed
Switch on Filter Unknown Senders
Settings, then Messages
Scroll to the message filtering section.
Turn on Filter Unknown Senders
Messages from anyone not in your contacts, and who you have never replied to, move into a separate list.
Silence what is left
In Settings, Notifications, Messages, Customize Notifications, switch off notifications for unknown senders. The messages still arrive; they stop interrupting you.
For many people this is the whole answer, and it is free. Try it for a week before paying anyone for anything.
What it will not do. It sorts by who sent the message, not by what the message says. A parcel delivery scam and a real two-factor code from a bank both come from unknown senders, so both land in the same pile. And once you reply to a number even once, its later messages come straight back to your inbox.

What a message filter extension does differently
iOS lets one app at a time act as an SMS filter. When a message arrives from a sender you have never written to, iOS passes the sender and the body to that app inside a sandbox, waits for one of three verdicts, and then files the message. Nixring answers with junk, promotion, or leave it alone.
The classifier runs offline and looks at three things:
- 28 scam phrases. The wording that carries a smishing attempt, such as asking you to verify an account, warning that a parcel could not be delivered, or announcing a prize.
- Links. Every host in the message is extracted, including addresses written without a protocol. 10 known link shorteners and 16 domain endings that scam campaigns rely on send a message straight to Junk. An optional aggressive mode treats any link at all as junk.
- 8 promotional words. Sales and discount wording gets the softer promotion verdict, which files the message without calling it a scam.
A whitelist of names, a keyword you would like added, or a per-sender exception are not available. The lists above are fixed in the app; the only switch you control is aggressive link mode.

Limits worth knowing before you pay
Three things no SMS filter on iPhone can do
- It never sees messages from senders already in your Messages history. iOS only routes unknown senders to a filter.
- It cannot delete a message, reply to it, or report it to a carrier. The only outcome is which folder the message lands in.
- It cannot learn from your corrections, because it is never told whether its verdict was right.
A message wrongly filed as junk is still in the Junk folder in Messages, so nothing is lost. It is worth checking that folder for the first week.
